Misunderstood in Tokyo — Bowing to a Vending Machine

16:9 video, 11 seconds. A rain-soaked neon side street in Tokyo at night, where one tourist's over-polite bow to a vending machine becomes an accidental citywide custom.

0-3s: Tourist Sam, damp windbreaker and backpack straps, feeds coins into a glowing vending machine and retrieves a steaming hot coffee. Remembering his phrasebook manners, he bows deeply to the machine and thanks it in careful, halting Japanese. The neon washes his face blue and magenta while rain streaks the machine's glass and drips from its awning.
3-7s: A passing salaryman with a briefcase and wet suit trousers freezes mid-step, watches, and concludes this must be the proper etiquette. He bows gravely to the next machine down the block. A commuter behind him bows too. The camera drifts wide: within minutes a ragged line of office workers, students, and shopkeepers is bowing in turn to a whole row of vending machines, each straightening with a satisfied nod.
7-11s: Sam watches his accidental tradition spread down the block, equal parts honored and horrified, his coffee going cold in his hand. A news van screeches in; a camera crew rushes out, lights blooming white in the rain, and the reporter bows to a machine before going live on the phenomenon.

Subjects: Sam in a wrinkled navy windbreaker with a camera strap across his chest; salarymen in dark suits with loosened ties; glowing machines stocked with canned coffee. Camera: moody neon-noir handheld at shoulder height, a slow push through the bowing line, ending on a wide static shot of the full row of bowers with the news crew's lights flaring. Lighting: electric neon signage against deep blue night, red and cyan reflections smeared across wet pavement, practical machine glow lighting every bow. Atmosphere: cultural-comedy snowball — sincere, absurd, unstoppable. Style: indie travel film, wet-street realism, shallow depth of field on rain, high-contrast night grade.
